Included are 2 booklets written in Hebrew.For Several hundred years from the 4th century until the 15th century, there existed in Kodungalloor-Crangoanore (India) an independent Jewish state, quite probably the only independent Jewish territory in the world between the destruction of the Second temple and the establishment of the State of Israel. For five hundred years the Jewish community lived under the rule of the three European powers who in turn governed the area of Cochin: the Portuguese (1494-1662); the Dutch (1662-1795);and the British(1795-1947).As a result of the conquests, the original Jews of Cochin were joined by European Jews--Spanish, Portuguese, Ashkenazim, Yemenites, Jews from Syria, Spanish Morocco, Persian and at a later stage- from the 19th century on - Iraqi Jews as well. Because of the incorporation of the migrants into Cochin, the melodies of the High holy Days reflect a fascinating combining of various communities and thus we are able to identify musical traditions of Jews from Babylon, Yemen , Spain, Aleppo etc.
