- Cheikh Raymond Leyris
- Chant D'Exil - Songs of Exile
Raymond Leyris was one of Algeria's more important singers and master of the oud. It was said that when he performed on radio or television, the streets would be deserted. With the take over of Muslim fundamentalism, relations between Jews and Arabs cooled to the point that most left Algeria. Unfortunately, Cheikh Raymond was not so lucky as he was kille in June of 1961.The songs on this collection were recorded in 1955 and feature among others, another star of Algerian music, Sylvain Ghrenassia and--on guitar, his son--Gaston Ghrenassia, who would become a world known recording artist under the name Enrico Macias.
