Title:
Kol Yehuda - Forgotten Sounds From the Groningeen synagogue
Category:
Cantorial

Order #: 01358
From the Booklet: In 1850 the first synagogue choir was founded in the Netherlands in Assen, immediately followed by Groningen in 1851. This ÔnoveltyÕ was not appreciated by the more conservative members of the community. The choir singing was the start of a fierce conflict leading to a split off. Only after thirty years unity was restored. Since then, the musical tradition has been able to develop without interference. At the end of the 19th century, there were eminent cantors like JI Vleeschhouwer and Levie Rosenblatt, brother of the world famous cantor, Yossele Rosenblatt, and in the thirties of the 20th century, JL Lichtenstein. About 1913, there was an active choral society of synagogue choir, Legowoud Oelesiferes, later a mixed choir came intobeing.
